Looking for an Octopus Energy referral code?
Octopus normally uses a personal referral link rather than a code that you type into a box.
When a new customer joins through a valid Octopus referral link, they currently receive £50 energy credit. The existing customer who shared the link also receives £50 credit.
You can use my Octopus referral link below:

Check that the referral reward is shown on the Octopus joining page before completing your application.
What is an Octopus Energy referral code?
An Octopus Energy referral code identifies the existing customer who introduced someone new to Octopus.
The code is usually contained within that customer’s personal referral link.
For example, Octopus referral links often use an address beginning with:
share.octopus.energy
Opening the link connects your application to the referring customer automatically. You do not normally need to copy the code or enter it separately.
Octopus itself sometimes refers to this as a unique referral code, but its customer guidance tells people to share and join through the unique referral link.
Is it an Octopus referral code or referral link?
In practical terms, it is mainly a referral link.
People often search for an Octopus referral code because many joining offers require a promotional code to be entered during checkout.
The Octopus household referral scheme works differently:
- An existing customer shares their personal referral link.
- The new customer opens that link.
- They request a quote and complete the switch.
- Octopus records which customer made the referral.
- Both accounts receive the qualifying reward.
There is not usually a separate referral-code box that you need to find during the online application.
Use my Octopus Energy referral link
You can start your Octopus Energy switch through my referral link:
The link should take you to the Octopus website with the referral already attached.
Before continuing, check that the current referral offer is displayed.
How much is the Octopus referral credit?
The current standard household referral reward is:
- £50 energy credit for the new customer
- £50 energy credit for the customer who referred them
That is £100 in total, split equally between the two Octopus accounts.
The reward is energy-account credit. It is not normally paid into the new customer’s bank account.
The credit contributes towards charges on the Octopus account and should appear in the account transaction history or on a later statement.
Offers can change, so rely on the reward shown by Octopus when you join.
How do I claim the Octopus referral credit?
To claim the referral reward:
- Open a valid Octopus referral link.
- Enter your postcode and property details.
- Review your quote and available tariffs.
- Complete the switch through the linked Octopus page.
- Wait for Octopus to begin supplying your property.
- Make your first successful Direct Debit payment.
Octopus states that the new customer must be on supply and have made their first successful Direct Debit payment before the referral reward becomes payable.
It is best to use the referral link from the start rather than beginning the switch through another website.
Where do I enter an Octopus referral code?
You do not normally need to enter an Octopus referral code manually.
The referral information is contained within the link you use to begin your application.
Once you open the link, continue through that same browser window and complete the Octopus quote and joining process.
Avoid opening a separate Octopus quote page afterwards, as that could mean the referral is no longer attached to the application.
How do I know the Octopus referral has worked?
The best check is to look at the Octopus joining page before submitting your application.
It should show that a referral or joining reward is attached.
You can also:
- Save a screenshot of the offer shown during sign-up.
- Keep the confirmation email from Octopus.
- Make a note of the referral link you used.
- Check your Octopus transaction history after your first payment.
The referral credit may not appear immediately because your switch and first Direct Debit must complete first.
Octopus has previously stated that referral credit is added within around ten days of the first Direct Debit appearing, although the exact timing can vary.
Can I add an Octopus referral code after joining?
You should use the referral link before submitting your application.
Octopus does not promise that a referral can always be added retrospectively.
If you have already applied without using a referral link, contact Octopus as soon as possible and ask whether the referral can be attached before your switch completes.
Provide:
- Your name
- Your new Octopus account details
- The email address used for the application
- The referral link or code you intended to use
Octopus may be able to help, but it is safer not to rely on a referral being added afterwards.
Can existing Octopus customers use a referral code?
An existing Octopus customer cannot normally use another customer’s referral code to receive a new joining reward on their existing account.
The referral offer is mainly for new customers moving their household energy supply to Octopus.
Existing customers can instead find their own referral link in their online account and share it with friends or family.
When an eligible new customer joins through that link, both customers receive the current referral reward.
Can I use a referral code through a comparison website?
You should not assume that a referral will work when joining through a comparison website or another third party.
Octopus terms state that customers may only qualify when they sign up through the referral link rather than through a third-party comparison service.
That means the safest process is:
- Open the referral link directly.
- Request the quote on the Octopus website.
- Complete the application through that route.
Do not request a separate quote elsewhere and expect the referral to be added automatically.
Does an Octopus referral code work with smart tariffs?
The referral offer is connected to joining Octopus Energy as your supplier. It is not limited to one particular tariff.
After joining, you may be able to move to a smart tariff if you meet its eligibility requirements.
These could include:
- A working smart meter
- Half-hourly meter readings
- A compatible electric vehicle or charger
- A compatible heat pump
- A supported home battery
- Permission for Octopus to schedule or control a device
Using an Octopus referral link does not guarantee that you will qualify for every tariff.
You can read more about some of the main Octopus tariffs here:
Is the Octopus referral credit a discount code?
Not exactly.
A discount code usually reduces the quoted price immediately or applies a percentage discount during checkout.
The Octopus referral reward is account credit added after the qualifying conditions have been met.
It does not normally reduce:
- The tariff unit rate
- The standing charge
- The estimated annual cost shown in the quote
- The first Direct Debit amount immediately
Instead, the credit is placed on the Octopus account and used against future energy charges.
