Battery owners can now get paid to support the UK grid through Axle’s virtual power plant. The offer is simple: connect your battery, take part in grid events, and earn money when your battery exports during those events. Axle says there is a guaranteed minimum of £10 per month, with no contract, and most homes can earn more depending on how much they export during events.
This is part of a growing trend of “smart grid” or “flexibility” services, where home battery storage is used to help balance supply and demand on the electricity grid. Instead of just storing your solar or charging overnight on a cheap tariff, your battery can also generate income by exporting at the times the grid actually needs it most. If you already have solar panels, battery storage, or are on a time-of-use tariff like Octopus Intelligent Go, this can be an easy way to get more value from your setup.

How Axle Energy works
Axle connects compatible home batteries to its virtual power plant. When the UK electricity grid is under stress, your battery can export stored energy to help balance supply and demand. In return, you get paid for taking part.
Axle says grid events are typically around 60 minutes long and happen roughly four times per month.
The setup is designed to be simple:
- Sign up and connect your battery
- Take part in grid events
- Get paid for exported energy
From what Axle says, setup takes around five minutes. Once connected, it runs in the background unless you choose to opt out of events.
What can you earn
Axle says the current offer includes:
- £10 per month guaranteed
- £1 per kWh exported during grid events
- No contract
- Opt out at any time
They also say most homes earn more than the guaranteed minimum, depending on how often they participate and how much energy they export.
Control and battery protection
One of the obvious questions with any battery flexibility or virtual power plant scheme is how much control you give up.
Axle says you stay in control and can skip an event in the app if you do not want to take part. It also says the software operates within manufacturer limits to protect your battery warranty and long-term battery health.
That should make this more appealing if you want to earn from your battery, but do not want to hand over full control.
Tariff compatibility
Axle says the service is compatible with most tariffs, including standard and time-of-use tariffs.
However, it is not compatible with tariffs that directly control your battery.
If you are already using a smart tariff or another battery optimisation service, it is worth checking the details before signing up.
Is my battery supported?
The easiest way to check is via Axle’s own page here:
https://vpp.axle.energy/faq
That will always have the most up-to-date list of supported batteries and requirements.
At the time of writing, Axle lists support for:
- Fox ESS
- GivEnergy
- Sigenergy
- Solax
- Solis
Support may expand over time, so it is worth checking the official page before signing up.
Is Axle Energy worth it?
If you already have a compatible home battery, Axle looks like an easy way to earn a bit of extra income from it. The guaranteed monthly payment gives you a baseline, and the ability to opt out of events keeps you in control.
For me, the main attraction is that this is not just about export rates or arbitrage. It is about using battery storage to support the grid at the times it actually needs help.
