Appliance Usage History

I get a lot of questions about how much electricity everyday appliances actually use. Things like how much a washing machine pulls over a year or what a fridge costs to run each month.

Rather than rely on manufacturer estimates, I’ve been logging real numbers from my own home for many years. That includes all the usual kitchen kit along with bigger loads like the heat pump and EV charging where I have years of data.

This post pulls everything together in one place. Each section walks through an appliance, how we use it in our house and a summary of its monthly consumption. If you’re trying to work out what’s using what in your own home or you’re just curious how different devices stack up, you should find this helpful.

My Appliance Usage History

Table of Contents

House and People Summary

To give some context for the numbers below, here’s the setup at home. It’s a 1930s semi with three floors including a loft conversion. We’re a family of four with two teenagers, so most appliances get a decent amount of use. The house is about 98 square metres and has a mix of improvements over the years. There’s a ground floor rear extension from around twenty years ago, cavity wall insulation that’s at least fifteen years old and a mix of double glazing that ranges from ten to twenty years old. The loft extension was built about a decade ago and came with poorly fitted PIR insulation. The EPC score is a D, based on an assessment done before the solar was installed in 2019.

Appliances List

Here’s everything that’s monitored.

  • Fridge Freezer Beko CF5015APW (2016)

  • Washing Machine Bosch WAU28T64GB (2021)

  • Heat Pump Tumble Dryer Bosch WTR88T81GB (2021)

  • Dishwasher Bosch SPV40C10GB (2016)

  • Induction Cooker AEG CIB6742ACB (2024)

  • 5.1kW Perlight solar panels on a 3.68kW Solaredge inverter (September 2018)
  • myenergi Zappi EV Charger (August 2020)

  • 5kW Vaillant Arotherm Plus Heat Pump (October 2022)

Each appliance has its own section below with a short summary and the full monthly history.

Monitoring Setup

For the smaller items, the 3 pin plug items, I use Local Bytes Smart Plugs to track appliance usage history.

The data is pushed into my Home Assistant installation, which is then sent over to my emoncms (open energy monitor platform) for aggregation.

For the larger devices (solar, induction cooker, EV charger etc), I use Open Energy Monitor system that uses CT clamps.

For the heat pump, this is again Open Energy Monitor.  But for complete accuracy alongside the heat meter, I use a MID approved billing grade SDM120M modbus electricity meter.

How much electricity does a washing machine use?

We purchased the Bosch WAU28T64GB washing machine back in 2021 and has been faultless to this point.

With a family of four, including two teenagers we do a lot of washing each week.

How much electricity does a tumble dryer use?

We purchased the Bosch WTR88T81GB heat pump tumble dryer back in 2021 replacing our old compressor model.

Just like the washing machine, the tumble dryer gets a lot of use in our house.

I wrote a whole article on Heat Pump Tumble Dryer Running Costs where I compare the heat pump model to our old compressor version.

Our Bosch SPV40C10GB slimline dishwasher is another one of our oldest appliances, purchased in 2016.

It usually gets put on once a day, usually overnight on a time of use tariff.

How much electricity does an EV charger use?

We got our first EV back in the summer of 2020 and alongside this we had a myenergi Zappi EV charger installed.

In the summer of 2023 we were between cars, hence the drop off in usage.

And then in early 2025 we moved to being a two EV family.

My wife commutes and we go on holidays in hers, whereas mine is just a run-around town for taking the kids to various hobbies and classes etc.  We don’t do a massive amount of miles.

Approx. 6,000 in 2024 and maybe heading to over 9,000 miles by the end of 2025.

We are currently on Intelligent Octopus Go tariff as that suits us best.
