Half Hourly Electricity Prices UK

If you have started looking into smart tariffs, you have probably come across the idea of half hourly electricity prices in the UK. This is not marketing fluff. It reflects how the wholesale electricity market actually works.

Behind the scenes, Great Britain’s power market is settled in 30 minute chunks, often called settlement periods. Every day is split into 48 half hour slots, and generators and suppliers trade electricity for each of those individual periods. Prices move up and down throughout the day depending on demand, weather, generation mix, and system constraints.

Historically, most households never saw this level of detail. Bills were based on flat unit rates because traditional meters could not record when electricity was used. Smart meters changed that. With half hourly consumption data now available, suppliers can offer time of use tariffs that track the real shape of the market.

This is where tariffs such as Octopus Agile, Intelligent Octopus Go, Tracker, and other smart tariffs come in. Instead of one fixed price all day, the unit rate can vary by time window. When wholesale prices are low, often overnight or during windy periods, smart tariffs can pass some of those savings through. When the system is tight, prices rise.

In the UK market, Octopus Energy currently offers one of the widest ranges of consumer smart tariffs, spanning half hourly wholesale tracking (Agile), daily tracking (Tracker), EV focused tariffs like Go and Intelligent Go, and specialist options for heat pumps (Cosy), solar and batteries. This breadth is a big reason why many flexible homes end up comparing against Octopus first.

For homeowners with flexible demand, think EV charging, batteries, or heat pumps, half hourly pricing opens the door to genuine optimisation. Shift usage into cheaper windows and the running costs can drop meaningfully. Stay on peak periods and you will likely pay more.

It is worth remembering that not all “time of use” tariffs are truly half hourly. Some use fixed cheap windows, while others like Agile directly follow the wholesale curve every 30 minutes. Understanding that difference is key when comparing options.

If you want to go deeper, this topic links closely with how the wholesale market sets prices, how smart meters enable half hourly settlement, and how specific tariffs structure their off peak windows.  Read Wholesale Energy Pricing.
