How noisy is a Vaillant heat pump?

In normal operation a Vaillant heat pump is much quieter than many people expect. The aroTHERM plus range typically runs around the mid-40 dB range at one metre in standard mode, which is closer to a quiet conversation than a traditional air conditioning unit.

From my own installation, the sound is most noticeable during defrosts or when the fan ramps up on colder days, but even then it tends to blend into background outdoor noise.

I’ve logged heat pump performance alongside outside temperature, and often the ambient conditions are louder than the unit itself.  My unit sits bang outside our dining room window too.

Noise perception also depends on placement. A well-positioned outdoor unit away from boundaries and reflective walls can make a big difference. Correct mounting and anti-vibration feet help too. Most complaints I see come from poor siting rather than the heat pump model itself.
